Acid Reflux Treatment
Acid reflux, also known as
"reflux esophagitis", is an inflammation of the esophagus caused by
regurgitation of the contents of the stomach. Acid reflux is when some acid
leaks up (refluxes) into the oesophagus. Many people take over-the-counter
antacids for a quick ease of acid reflux, but for most people, a proper diet is
the best solution for overcoming acid reflux. |
We have been told for years
that coffee, acidic fruit as well as spicy foods can aggravate acid reflux.
For most people with acid reflux, the discomfort associated with symptoms can
affect quality of life and everyday activities, including work.
Reflux is actually a normal
occurrence in most people. The patient has had what he or she calls "heartburn"
(the main symptom of acid reflux, or GERD, gastroesophageal reflux) for years
and has been taking prescription medication for acid reflux once and sometimes
twice a day. As is often the case, the body has ways (mechanisms) to protect
itself from the harmful effects of reflux and acid. Drinking milk could be a
quick fix to the acid reflux problem. Certain foods can aggravate your
heartburn symptoms, and it's best to limit or avoid completely those foods and
drinks that result in acid reflux.
Acid reflux can sometimes
result in serious complications. Acid reflux disease is a condition where
stomach acid reflux into the esophagus, thereby causing acid indigestion. Acid
reflux can be treated with simple antacids and modification of diet, but
sometimes stronger treatments such as proton pump inhibitors or histamine
blockers are the only medications that work. Acid reflux sufferers should
consume high fiber foods such as fruits and vegetables. Acid reflux is becoming
a common diagnosis of Americans in recent years, and even more common are the
every increasing home remedies and symptom relievers seen in commercials on
television.
Acid Reflux Treatment
Treatments range from lifestyle
changes to medicines to surgery. Treatment often involves a combination of
quick-relief medicines to dilate constricted airways and long-term medications
that reduce inflammation or relax muscles. A number of drugs are registered for
GERD treatment, and they are among the most often prescribed forms of medication
in most Western countries. Drug treatment is often only needed for a short time
although it may have to be repeated since some symptoms may re-occur. A small
number of people with GERD may need surgery because of severe reflux and poor
response to medical treatment.
